Access Point Ceiling Placement in Houston, TX 77019
Two very different buildings share this ZIP code: pre-war houses with plaster ceilings, ornamental cornices and no usable attic over half the plan, and concrete towers along Allen Parkway where the ceiling is the underside of a post-tensioned slab. Neither takes a standard ceiling access point install.
Plaster, wire lath, and what each one does to a wireless design
Before anything is mounted in a pre-war 77019 house we need to know what the ceiling is made of, because two ceilings that look identical under paint behave like different materials — to the radio and to the drill.
Houses of this period were finished in plaster over lath. In the earliest and plainest work that lath is wood: thin strips with gaps the plaster squeezes through to form keys. Elsewhere, and in most curved work, ornamental ceilings and later repairs, it is expanded metal lath — a continuous sheet of stretched steel mesh across the whole ceiling plane.
That distinction matters enormously. A continuous metal mesh behaves as a partial shield: attenuation through it is far higher than through modern gypsum board, and uneven, because the mesh and the furring behind it are not uniform. In a three-storey River Oaks house the consequence is that floors are far less coupled than in a modern build — signal often reaches the floor above better through the stair opening than through the ceiling itself. Bad news for anyone hoping one unit will serve the house, and quietly good news for the channel plan, since a well-shielded floor can reuse a channel that would interfere in lighter construction.
The same mesh changes how a hole is made. A hole saw catching expanded metal grabs, spins and tears plaster keys away from the lath several inches beyond the cut, and that damage shows up as a crack a week later rather than a hole on the day. Locate first, score the plaster, cut the metal at the right speed, support the surrounding surface throughout. A magnetic or capacitive stud finder is also close to useless through plaster on metal lath, so framing is located by other means before anything is committed.
Ceilings that have nothing above them
The assumption behind most access point installations — that there is an accessible void above the ceiling — fails across much of this housing stock. The ground floor of a two or three storey house has finished rooms above it, not attic. Coffered, beamed and tray ceilings have joinery and blocking in the way. Ornate cornices leave no clean margin at the wall. Attics converted to living space decades ago have no residual void at all.
So the route is designed rather than assumed, and the good ones come from unexpected directions:
- From above, not below. Lifting a floorboard inside a closet on the storey above is frequently cleaner and far more repairable than opening decorative plaster underneath.
- Through the joist bay. Where the void is a bay rather than open attic, the unit is placed to suit the bay direction and cable is fished along it to a chase.
- Existing vertical chases. Old houses are full of them — abandoned service runs, the backs of built-in cabinets, linen cupboards stacked floor to floor, stair bulkheads, redundant flues, the spaces beside chimney breasts.
- One small opening in the right place. Occasionally the honest answer is a modest, easily repaired cut in a plain field of ceiling rather than a long blind fish that risks the decorative work.
Unit position is then negotiated against the route. Placing a unit fifteen feet from the theoretically perfect spot, where a cable can reach without touching the cornice, is the better decision — and the coverage difference is usually undetectable.
Making the hardware disappear without crippling it
In this part of Houston the objection is rarely technical. It is that nobody wants a white disc on a hand-finished ceiling. A good deal can be done about that, and a few things cannot.
What works. Flush and in-ceiling kits drop the body into the void so only a slim trim ring sits proud. Recessed enclosures with a radio-transparent cover bring the visible surface nearly level with the plaster. Covers can be finished to a ceiling colour, and paintable covers exist for exactly this.
What does not. Metallic and metallic-effect paints are conductive and will degrade the radio badly, so a cover is never finished in bronze or silver, and never in anything applied thickly enough to fill the surface. Hiding a unit above a decorative dome, behind a metal air register or inside a cabinet with a solid door does not conceal it so much as switch it off gradually — and the customer usually blames the hardware.
Where nothing can go on the ceiling. The answer is not to force an omnidirectional ceiling unit onto a wall, where its pattern tips on its side and half goes into the masonry. It is a wall-format access point, engineered with an asymmetric pattern designed to mount vertically and radiate across the room.
On properties inside the River Oaks deed-restricted area, exterior-visible work can fall under architectural review. We provide locations and documentation for a submission and work to whatever is approved. We do not speak for the association, and we will not tell you a submission is unnecessary in order to start sooner.
The Allen Parkway towers: the slab you are not going to drill
A residence in a concrete tower is a different discipline. Above the ceiling is the underside of a post-tensioned slab containing tensioned steel strands under enormous load, and cutting one is a structural event, not a repair. Nothing is core-drilled without a scan and written building approval — and in most apartments there is no reason to go near it.
- Furred and dropped ceilings. Many units have a furred-down ceiling, bulkhead or soffit around the perimeter or over the kitchen and bathroom core, and that void usually carries cable and hosts a flush-mounted unit.
- Surface raceway, properly done. Slim raceway at the wall-to-ceiling junction finished in the wall colour is a respectable outcome in a concrete building, and vastly preferable to no coverage in the back bedroom.
Concrete and rebar attenuate heavily, which cuts both ways. A single unit near the entry hall will not serve a long apartment, so unit count rises. In exchange your neighbours’ networks are attenuated too — though in a tower you have neighbours above and below as well as either side, and the vertical ones are often the strongest sources on a survey.
Building procedure is part of the job: management’s work hours, the freight elevator booked rather than assumed, a certificate of insurance supplied before the date, and floor protection throughout.
The pool house, the garage apartment and the far end of the lot
River Oaks lots carry more than one building. A pool house, garage apartment, guest house and rear studio are all places people expect to work, all beyond what a unit in the main house delivers.
Each structure gets its own access point, fed properly. The link between buildings is the part worth care. A copper cable run between two structures ties their electrical systems together along a data path, and in a lightning-prone climate any difference in ground potential between buildings has somewhere to go — through your equipment. The correct method is fibre, which carries no current at all and breaks that path completely, with copper kept inside each structure and the electronics at each end protected.
Outdoor units are rated hardware under soffits and eaves, positioned for the terrace or pool deck actually in use rather than aimed optimistically at the whole lot.
What the estimate turns on in 77019
Nothing here is quoted by the square foot and we never give a dollar figure before seeing the property. What the number depends on:
- Ceiling construction — modern board, plaster on wood lath, plaster on metal lath, or concrete. Four different labour propositions.
- Whether a void exists, and if not, what the alternative route costs in time and reinstatement.
- Finish expectations — a standard mount, a flush kit, or a fully recessed enclosure with matched trim.
- Unit count, since heavy construction and shielded floors raise it. That is physics rather than upselling, and the survey readings are shown to you.
- Building requirements — insurance certificates, restricted hours, elevator scheduling and protection all take real time in a managed tower.

Frequently asked questions
Can this be done without cutting into my plaster ceilings?
In a great many cases, yes. Preferred routes go through places nobody sees — a lifted floorboard in a closet on the storey above, a linen cupboard that stacks floor to floor, the back of a built-in, a redundant flue or a stair bulkhead. Where no such route exists we would rather discuss one small opening in a plain field of ceiling than attempt a long blind fish past decorative work, because a torn plaster key does more damage than a clean cut.
Our building will not permit drilling the ceiling slab. Does that rule out proper Wi-Fi?
Not at all, and you should not let anyone drill it anyway. Post-tensioned slabs contain tensioned steel that must not be cut, and the work-arounds are well established: furred-down ceilings and bulkheads, the chases the building already has, slim surface raceway finished to the wall colour, and paths along the top of joinery.
We added more access points and the network got worse. How is that possible?
One of the most common faults we are called to correct. Extra units placed without a channel plan and left at factory power produce heavily overlapping cells on the same channels. Radios sharing a channel must take turns, so each spends a growing share of its airtime waiting rather than transmitting, and devices hold a distant strong signal instead of moving to the near one. The repair is usually a redesign of power, channels and placement using hardware already on site.
Do thick masonry and plaster walls simply mean we need a more powerful access point?
No, because attenuation applies equally in both directions and the weak radio in the pair is the device in your hand. A wall cutting the access point’s signal by a given amount cuts your laptop’s reply by roughly the same, so raising output improves only the half that was already stronger. Heavy construction is answered with more, smaller, well-placed cells — essentially one per well-enclosed area.
Will the access point be visible on a coffered or decorated ceiling?
There is a lot of scope. Flush and in-ceiling kits sink the body into the void leaving a slim ring, recessed enclosures with a radio-transparent cover come close to flat, and covers can be finished in the ceiling colour. The firm limits are that a cover must never be painted in a metallic product and the unit cannot be buried behind metal or a solid door.
Will you work with our interior designer, architect or the architectural review?
Routinely. We survey, propose locations with the coverage reasoning behind each, and supply what is needed for drawings or a review submission. If a preferred location is refused we will tell you honestly what it costs in coverage and what the next best position is. What we will not do is claim a submission is unnecessary, or quietly install something exterior-visible and hope nobody raises it.
